Shri Sanjay Garg, IAS, DG, BIS

Shri Sanjay Garg, IAS is the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s apex standards organization under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. A senior Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1994 batch from the Kerala cadre, he assumed charge as DG with effect from 1 November 2025.

With over three decades of administrative experience, Shri Garg brings expertise in strategic planning, policy formulation, and implementation across diverse sectors including agriculture, food logistics, defense, industrial promotion, and finance. Before taking leadership of BIS, he served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agriculture, Research and Education (DARE) and as Secretary of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), where he led digital transformation initiatives and expanded platforms such as the Kisan Sarathi portal to enhance farmer engagement and research outreach.

As Director General of BIS, Shri Garg is responsible for overseeing the development, revision, and implementation of Indian standards, conformity assessment systems, product certification schemes, and quality infrastructure frameworks that support consumer protection, industrial competitiveness, and export facilitation. In addition to heading BIS, he serves as President of India’s national committee in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), reinforcing India’s engagement with global standards bodies.

Under his leadership, BIS continues to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms, harmonize national standards with international best practices, and support innovation-driven growth across sectors. Shri Garg’s vision emphasizes a consumer-centric and industry-friendly standardization ecosystem that enhances transparency, supports MSMEs in compliance, and contributes to building trust in products and services for domestic and global markets.
