Whole Time Director, President - Flexible Packaging and New Product Development and Director – Sustainability, UFlex Ltd.
Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai is a distinguished leader in the global packaging industry, currently serving as a Whole-Time Director on the Board of UFlex Limited. With nearly 40 years of experience, his career is defined by technical mastery in mechanical engineering and strategic business acumen, particularly in pioneering sustainable packaging solutions on a global scale.
At UFlex Limited, Pillai holds a multi-faceted leadership portfolio, serving as the President of Flexible Packaging and New Product Development, while also acting as the Director of Sustainability. Since joining the company in 1996, he has scaled operations to manage a workforce of over 800 individuals, overseeing the entire spectrum of packaging technology from pre-press and cylinder making to high-end conversion and multi-continental manufacturing.
eevaraj Gopal Pillai stands as a central figure in the global movement toward a circular economy, leveraging his deep technical expertise to solve some of the packaging industry’s most persistent environmental challenges. For over a decade, he has spearheaded the development of commercially viable solutions for plastic waste, most notably in the recycling of Multi-Layer Plastics (MLP). Under his leadership, UFlex has scaled its recycling capacity to process nearly 30,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste annually across its international facilities in India, Mexico, Poland, and Egypt, transforming what was once considered unrecyclable material into valuable resources.
His commitment to sustainability is rooted in radical technological innovation rather than just incremental change. Pillai was instrumental in the industrial implementation of Energy Curing Technology and Enzymatic Delamination, processes that significantly lower the carbon footprint of manufacturing and allow for the separation of complex laminate layers. Beyond the factory floor, he is a dedicated global advocate, representing the packaging industry at prestigious international forums like the ISO/TC 61 meetings. There, he contributes to the creation of worldwide environmental standards for plastics and frequently moderates high-level strategic discussions on achieving true circularity in the plastics value chain.
Pillai’s professional philosophy is characterized by a forward-thinking integration of cutting-edge technology—such as the use of Artificial Intelligence for advanced waste sorting—with a steadfast commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This balanced approach has earned him some of the highest accolades in the field, including awards from AIMCAL, the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), and DuPont. His legacy of environmental stewardship is further cemented through his role as a co-founder of the PPRDC, an organization specifically dedicated to researching and implementing sustainable solutions for post-production plastic waste.
